Introductory Latin

In this course, students will explore the culture and civilization of Ancient Rome and the influences of this society upon subsequent civilizations through the medium of the Latin language.   Students will learn the forms and of the five declensions for nouns/adjectives and the four conjugations of verbs in the Latin language.  In addition, students will learn the basic rules of Latin grammar.

 

Latin will be of great benefit for any students who succeed in this course.  In addition to the obvious benefit of learning English vocabulary, translation of every Latin sentence requires analytical thinking skills of identifying the components of each word, analyzing same and finally synthesizing this knowledge before a correct translation can be created.   As to the value of Latin in mastering English reading and vocabulary skills, the College Board has published an analysis of the effect of various foreign languages on the verbal portion of the SAT

Spanish IV is an intermediate course taught mostly in Spanish. This course will stress the production of written and spoken Spanish for practical communication in student-centered learning environment using the target language as the primary means of communication. Intermediate and advanced grammar and vocabulary will be taught through culturally centered, thematic units using authentic materials such as newspapers, radio or television broadcasts to expose students to real-life applications and situations. Thematic units of study include but are not limited to Relationships, Tourism and Travel, Visual and Performing Arts, The Environment, and Technology.  Assessments are based on performance in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

This course will be used for to create shells for participants to build their own courses during the OCD training.
